When the sunset is so beautiful that you pull off in the middle of nowhere just to watch it.
I enrolled in my first professional culinary certification course so I can learn more about the art of plant-based cooking & healing the body through food. My goal is to combine my culinary skills with my love of filmmaking to create some inspiring health-related projects in the future.
Here are some of my assignments from class. For cooking & recipes, check out my cooking blog 'holistic cooking'.
June & July 2017
I am grateful to be surrounded by friends who love going on adventures & being creative.
Funny story: Raphael and I went to NAB for a tech meeting on Saturday in Vegas and after the meeting we had 48 hours until the actual conference started.
So... what did we do?
Well... we spontaneously drove to Utah, went 4-wheeling in the desert, camped on the shore of Lake Powell, witnessed the Milky Way & watched the sun rise over the lake from our tent, kayaked 6 miles through Lake Powell and hiked another 5 miles through lower Antelope Canyon in Arizona and then drove back to Vegas just in time to geek out over all of the new technology.
We barely slept and drove over 1,000 miles but damn was it fun.
We stayed at Lone Rock campground on Lake Powell. A few things about this place:
1.) It's B.E.A-UTIFUL.
2.) It can be really windy. So windy, in fact, that we thought our tent was going to break & we cleared out the trunk of our SUV just in case we had to sleep in it. We didn't (thank goodness).
3.) Go during a new moon and walk outside at 3 am. You may get lucky and see the Milky Way with your naked eyes. We did and it was breathtaking.
4.) The spiders and snakes around the area are no joke. En route to the ladies room the next morning, there was a 3-inch poisonous spider on the bathroom door. The mens bathroom never looked so good.
We rented a home in the tiny fishing village of Reine for five nights during our trip to Norway last April. We had no plans - instead we set out every day in our cars with our camera gear & some PBJ's and headed in a different direction than the day before. It was absolutely incredible.
The images towards the bottom with the mirror-like water reflections and the boating dock were taken at the fjord in our back yard. We also got to witness the midnight sun - the last three photographs were taken at 2:30 in the morning down the street from our home.
If you want to see some of the incredible sights from our trip to Norway from a bird's eye view, check out Raphael's drone video "Norway: Into The Arctic" on Vimeo (click here to view).
Raphael and I hiked the first few miles of the famous Napali Coast Trail in Kauai, Hawaii and of course we hauled along three cameras because we're that crazy filmmaking adventure couple who loves to create stuff. Here are some stills I snapped from our hike.
First time 4-wheeling in the desert. Somewhere in the middle of Utah...
Kauai in a nutshell: perfect mangoes, huge waves (we're talking 30+ feet), so many roosters, beautiful sunsets, snorkeling with sea turtles, hiking atop mountains, enchanted forests, sneaking into fancy hotel pools, the best tacos ever, skateboarding through golf courses, double dates with my amazing parents, acai bowls, stand-up paddle boarding (sort of) and adventuring around on a tiny island with the love of my life. For more photos from Kauai, check out the Napali Coast and Waimea Canyon photo albums.
While in Kauai, we hiked the famous "Airplane Trail" in Waimea Canyon. Highly recommended (but it may not be for those with a fear of heights).
If you have the choice of going out and watching the sunset on a whim or staying in and watching Netflix in your living room - get off your booty and go watch the sunset. Nature > Netflix.
Spent a lovely afternoon walking around the Venice Canals with my love, some adorable ducks, a fire-thrower on a bridge drinking a beer, a couple of vintage cars and a surfer who may or may not regret sticking his tongue out as I snapped his photo. Just another Sunday in Venice Beach, CA.
While in Kauai, we went on a boat tour of the Napali Coast. We had a blast whale & dolphin watching, jumping off into the crystal clear blue water and snorkeling at 30 foot depth with a giant sea turtle. Sounds incredible, right? It was... but I would be lying if I didn't mention that I spent half of the day trying to not throw up. Mission accomplished... half of the boat, however, was not so lucky. Gotta love that winter high tide.
If you're visiting Kauai, I recommend going in the summertime when the water is much calmer. We honestly couldn't do a ton of water sports while we were there due to the high tides and rip currents but we had a ton of fun nonetheless.
Some of our shennanigans from an afternoon in downtown Los Angeles.
Raphael and I went on a spontaneous 24-hour road trip to Cambria, CA where we did some small-town exploring and hunkered down at The Fog's End b&b. The hosts were so nice and the town of Cambria is absolutely adorable - I would definitely recommend it for a weekend away.
While in Cambria - we wandered around town, ate dinner at The Wild Ginger (they have vegan options for all of you plant-eaters out there), caught up on some much-needed zzz's, did some writing at Linn's Restaurant with tea & breakfast and then slowly meandered our way back home, stopping through Santa Barbara for acai bowls along the way. It was the perfect little mini vacation.
If you get a chance to drive up the coast of California this spring, take it. Due to the massive amounts of rainfall we've received this past year (thank goodness) it is unbelievably green.
Behind the scenes of Amy May's music video shoot in El Mirage, CA.
I went to Norway with eight friends last April and it was one of the best trips I've ever been on. We started out by renting two cars in Oslo and road-tripped to Bergen and back before flying up to the Lofoten Islands (view those photos here). If you love beautiful landscapes - add Norway to the top of your list (especially the Lofoten Islands / Reine).
When I think of autumn, I picture large trees packed with red, orange and golden hues. This period had come and gone by the time I visited my parents in Michigan last November. Instead, I photographed what came next: the beautiful two-toned nature trail with rose gold leaves and bits of emerald green moss peaking through. So simple and yet so beautiful.
I wish that everyone could discover their passion in life and love it the way that this man loves his music. I snapped these candids in Ojai, CA and for some reason every time I look at them - I think of this John Lennon quote:
"When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down 'happy'. They told me I didn't understand the assignment, and I told them they didn't understand life."
I'm just using this gallery as an excuse to brag about how adorable my niece is. Kiddddddding. (Sort of). I snapped these cute candid portraits of my niece Lili while I was visiting Michigan this past Thanksgiving.
